Elijah Denounces Ahaziah

1After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.H4124H6586H3478H310H4194H2562Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay injured; so he sent messengers, telling them, "Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this injury."H274H5307H7639H5944H8111H2470H7971H4397H559H3212H1875H1176H430H6138H2421H24833But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Get up, go to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?'H4397H3068H1696H452H8664H6965H5927H7125H4397H4428H8111H1696H430H3478H1980H1875H1176H430H61384Now therefore thus says the LORD, 'You shall not leave the bed to which you have gone, but you shall surely die.'" So Elijah went.H559H3068H3381H4296H5927H4191H4191H452H32125The messengers returned to the king, who said to them, "Why have you returned?"H4397H7725H559H2088H77256They answered him, "There came a man to meet us, who said to us, 'Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him: Thus says the LORD: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not leave the bed to which you have gone, but shall surely die.'"H559H5927H376H5927H7125H559H3212H7725H4428H7971H1696H559H3068H430H3478H7971H1875H1176H430H6138H3381H4296H5927H4191H41917He said to them, "What sort of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things?"H1696H4941H376H5927H7125H1696H16978They answered him, "A hairy man, with a leather belt around his waist." He said, "It is Elijah the Tishbite."H559H8181H1167H376H247H232H5785H4975H559H452H86649Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, "O man of God, the king says, 'Come down.'"H4428H7971H8269H2572H2572H5927H3427H7218H2022H1696H376H430H4428H1696H338110But Elijah answered the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty." Then fire came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.H452H6030H1696H8269H2572H376H430H784H3381H8064H398H2572H3381H784H8064H398H257211Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty. He went up and said to him, "O man of God, this is the king's order: Come down quickly!"H7725H7971H312H8269H2572H2572H6030H1696H376H430H4428H559H3381H412012But Elijah answered them, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty." Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.H452H6030H1696H376H430H784H3381H8064H398H2572H784H430H3381H8064H398H257213Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. So the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and entreated him, "O man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty servants of yours, be precious in your sight.H7971H7725H8269H7992H2572H2572H7992H8269H2572H5927H935H3766H1290H5048H452H2603H1696H376H430H5315H5315H2572H5650H3365H586914Look, fire came down from heaven and consumed the two former captains of fifty men with their fifties; but now let my life be precious in your sight."H3381H784H3381H8064H398H8147H8269H7223H2572H2572H5315H3365H586915Then the angel of the LORD said to Elijah, "Go down with him; do not be afraid of him." So he set out and went down with him to the king,H4397H3068H1696H452H3381H3372H6440H6965H3381H442816and said to him, "Thus says the LORD: Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron,—is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word?—therefore you shall not leave the bed to which you have gone, but you shall surely die."H1696H559H3068H7971H4397H1875H1176H430H6138H430H3478H1875H1697H3381H4296H5927H4191H4191

Death of Ahaziah

17So he died according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken. His brother, Jehoram succeeded him as king in the second year of King Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat of Judah, because Ahaziah had no son.H4191H1697H3068H452H1696H3088H4427H8147H8141H3088H1121H3092H4428H3063H112118Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel?H3499H1697H274H6213H3789H5612H1697H3117H4428H3478

Elijah Ascends to Heaven

2Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.H3068H5927H452H8064H5591H452H3212H477H15372Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here; for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel.H452H559H477H3427H3068H7971H1008H477H559H3068H2416H5315H2416H5800H3381H10083The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD will take your master away from you?" And he said, "Yes, I know; keep silent."H1121H5030H1008H3318H477H559H3045H3068H3947H113H7218H3117H559H3045H28144Elijah said to him, "Elisha, stay here; for the LORD has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho.H452H559H477H3427H3068H7971H3405H559H3068H2416H5315H2416H5800H935H34055The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD will take your master away from you?" And he answered, "Yes, I know; be silent."H1121H5030H3405H5066H477H559H3045H3068H3947H113H7218H3117H559H3045H28146Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here; for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on.H452H559H3427H3068H7971H3383H559H3068H2416H5315H2416H5800H8147H32127Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan.H2572H376H1121H5030H1980H5975H5048H7350H8147H5975H33838Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground.H452H3947H155H1563H5221H4325H2673H8147H5674H27249When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you." Elisha said, "Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit."H5674H452H559H477H7592H6213H3947H477H559H8147H6310H730710He responded, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not."H559H7592H7185H7200H394711As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven.H1980H1980H1696H7393H784H5483H784H6504H8147H996H452H5927H5591H806412Elisha kept watching and crying out, "Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.H477H7200H6817H1H1H7393H3478H6571H7200H2388H899H7167H8147H7168

Elisha Succeeds Elijah

13He picked up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.H7311H155H452H5307H7725H5975H8193H338314He took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, saying, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" When he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.H3947H155H452H5307H5221H4325H559H3068H430H452H5221H4325H2673H477H567415When the company of prophets who were at Jericho saw him at a distance, they declared, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." They came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.H1121H5030H3405H7200H559H7307H452H5117H477H935H7125H7812H77616They said to him, "See now, we have fifty strong men among your servants; please let them go and seek your master; it may be that the spirit of the LORD has caught him up and thrown him down on some mountain or into some valley." He responded, "No, do not send them."H559H3426H5650H2572H2428H1121H582H3212H1245H113H7307H3068H5375H7993H259H2022H259H1516H559H797117But when they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, "Send them." So they sent fifty men who searched for three days but did not find him.H6484H954H559H7971H7971H2572H376H1245H7969H3117H467218When they came back to him (he had remained at Jericho), he said to them, "Did I not say to you, Do not go?"H7725H3427H3405H559H559H3212

Elisha Performs Miracles

19Now the people of the city said to Elisha, "The location of this city is good, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the land is unfruitful."H582H5892H559H477H4186H5892H2896H113H7200H4325H7451H776H792120He said, "Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it." So they brought it to him.H559H3947H2319H6746H7760H4417H394721Then he went to the spring of water and threw the salt into it, and said, "Thus says the LORD, I have made this water wholesome; from now on neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it."H3318H4161H4325H7993H4417H559H559H3068H7495H4325H4194H792122So the water has been wholesome to this day, according to the word that Elisha spoke.H4325H7495H3117H1697H477H169623He went up from there to Bethel; and while he was going up on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, "Go away, baldhead! Go away, baldhead!"H5927H1008H5927H1870H3318H6996H5288H5892H7046H559H5927H7142H5927H714224When he turned around and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two she-bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.H6437H310H7200H7043H8034H3068H3318H8147H1677H3293H1234H705H8147H320625From there he went on to Mount Carmel, and then returned to Samaria.H3212H2022H3760H7725H8111

2Kings 3

Jehoram Reigns over Israel

3In the eighteenth year of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, Jehoram son of Ahab became king over Israel in Samaria; he reigned twelve years.H3088H1121H256H4427H3478H8111H8083H6240H8141H3092H4428H3063H4427H8147H6240H81412He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, though not like his father and mother, for he removed the pillar of Baal that his father had made.H6213H7451H5869H3068H1H517H5493H4676H1168H1H62133Nevertheless he clung to the sin of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he caused Israel to commit; he did not depart from it.H1692H2403H3379H1121H5028H3478H2398H5493

War with Moab

4Now King Mesha of Moab was a sheep breeder, who used to deliver to the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs, and the wool of one hundred thousand rams.H4338H4428H4124H5349H7725H4428H3478H3967H505H3733H3967H505H352H67855But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.H256H4194H4428H4124H6586H4428H34786So King Jehoram marched out of Samaria at that time and mustered all Israel.H4428H3088H3318H8111H3117H6485H34787As he went he sent word to King Jehoshaphat of Judah, "The king of Moab has rebelled against me; will you go with me to battle against Moab?" He answered, "I will; I am with you, my people are your people, my horses are your horses."H3212H7971H3092H4428H3063H559H4428H4124H6586H3212H4124H4421H559H5927H5971H5971H5483H54838Then he asked, "By which way shall we march?" Jehoram answered, "By the way of the wilderness of Edom."H559H1870H5927H559H1870H4057H1239So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of Edom set out; and when they had made a roundabout march of seven days, there was no water for the army or for the animals that were with them.H4428H3478H3212H4428H3063H4428H123H5437H7651H3117H1870H4325H4264H929H727210Then the king of Israel said, "Alas! The LORD has summoned us, three kings, only to be handed over to Moab."H4428H3478H559H162H3068H7121H7969H4428H7121H5414H3027H412411But Jehoshaphat said, "Is there no prophet of the LORD here, through whom we may inquire of the LORD?" Then one of the servants of the king of Israel answered, "Elisha son of Shaphat, who used to pour water on the hands of Elijah, is here."H3092H559H5030H3068H1875H3068H259H4428H3478H5650H6030H559H477H1121H8202H3332H4325H3027H45212Jehoshaphat said, "The word of the LORD is with him." So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.H3092H559H1697H3068H3426H4428H3478H3092H4428H123H338113Elisha said to the king of Israel, "What have I to do with you? Go to your father's prophets or to your mother's." But the king of Israel said to him, "No; it is the LORD who has summoned us, three kings, only to be handed over to Moab."H477H559H4428H3478H3212H5030H1H5030H517H4428H3478H559H3068H7121H7969H4428H7121H5414H3027H412414Elisha said, "As the LORD of hosts lives, whom I serve, were it not that I have regard for King Jehoshaphat of Judah, I would give you neither a look nor a glance.H477H559H3068H6635H2416H6440H5975H3884H5375H6440H3092H4428H3063H5027H720015But get me a musician." And then, while the musician was playing, the power of the LORD came on him.H3947H5059H5059H5059H3027H306816And he said, "Thus says the LORD, 'I will make this wadi full of pools.'H559H559H3068H6213H5158H135617For thus says the LORD, 'You shall see neither wind nor rain, but the wadi shall be filled with water, so that you shall drink, you, your cattle, and your animals.'H559H3068H7200H7307H7200H1653H5158H4390H4325H8354H4735H92918This is only a trifle in the sight of the LORD, for he will also hand Moab over to you.H7043H5869H3068H5414H4124H302719You shall conquer every fortified city and every choice city; every good tree you shall fell, all springs of water you shall stop up, and every good piece of land you shall ruin with stones."H5221H4013H5892H4004H5892H5307H2896H6086H5640H4599H4325H3510H2896H2513H6820The next day, about the time of the morning offering, suddenly water began to flow from the direction of Edom, until the country was filled with water.H1242H4503H5927H935H4325H1870H123H776H4390H432521When all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, all who were able to put on armor, from the youngest to the oldest, were called out and were drawn up at the frontier.H4124H8085H4428H5927H3898H6817H2296H2290H4605H5975H136622When they rose early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, the Moabites saw the water opposite them as red as blood.H7925H1242H8121H2224H4325H4124H7200H4325H5048H122H181823They said, "This is blood; the kings must have fought together, and killed one another. Now then, Moab, to the spoil!"H559H1818H4428H2717H2717H5221H376H7453H4124H799824But when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked the Moabites, who fled before them; as they entered Moab they continued the attack.H935H4264H3478H3478H6965H5221H4124H5127H6440H5221H5221H412425The cities they overturned, and on every good piece of land everyone threw a stone, until it was covered; every spring of water they stopped up, and every good tree they felled. Only at Kir-hareseth did the stone walls remain, until the slingers surrounded and attacked it.H2040H5892H2896H2513H7993H376H68H4390H5640H4599H4325H5307H2896H6086H7025H7604H68H7051H5437H522126When the king of Moab saw that the battle was going against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through, opposite the king of Edom; but they could not.H4428H4124H7200H4421H2388H3947H7651H3967H376H8025H2719H1234H4428H123H320127Then he took his firstborn son who was to succeed him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the wall. And great wrath came upon Israel, so they withdrew from him and returned to their own land.H3947H1060H1121H4427H5927H5930H2346H1419H7110H3478H5265H7725H776

Elisha and the Widow’s Oil

4Now the wife of a member of the company of prophets cried to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead; and you know that your servant feared the LORD, but a creditor has come to take my two children as slaves."H6817H259H802H802H1121H5030H477H559H5650H376H4191H3045H5650H3373H3068H5383H935H3947H8147H3206H56502Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" She answered, "Your servant has nothing in the house, except a jar of oil."H477H559H6213H5046H3426H1004H559H8198H1004H610H80813He said, "Go outside, borrow vessels from all your neighbors, empty vessels and not just a few.H559H3212H7592H3627H2351H7934H7386H3627H45914Then go in, and shut the door behind you and your children, and start pouring into all these vessels; when each is full, set it aside."H935H5462H1817H1121H3332H3627H5265H43925So she left him and shut the door behind her and her children; they kept bringing vessels to her, and she kept pouring.H3212H5462H1817H1157H1121H1992H5066H33326When the vessels were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." But he said to her, "There are no more." Then the oil stopped flowing.H3627H4390H559H1121H5066H3627H559H3627H8081H59757She came and told the man of God, and he said, "Go sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your children can live on the rest."H935H5046H376H430H559H3212H4376H8081H7999H5386H2421H1121H3498

Elisha Raises the Shunammite’s Son

8One day Elisha was passing through Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to have a meal. So whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for a meal.H3117H477H5674H7766H1419H802H2388H398H3899H1767H5674H5493H398H38999She said to her husband, "Look, I am sure that this man who regularly passes our way is a holy man of God.H559H376H3045H6918H376H430H5674H854810Let us make a small roof chamber with walls, and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that he can stay there whenever he comes to us."H6213H6996H5944H7023H7760H4296H7979H3678H4501H935H549311One day when he came there, he went up to the chamber and lay down there.H3117H935H5493H5944H790112He said to his servant Gehazi, "Call the Shunammite woman." When he had called her, she stood before him.H559H1522H5288H7121H7767H7121H5975H644013He said to him, "Say to her, Since you have taken all this trouble for us, what may be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?" She answered, "I live among my own people."H559H559H2729H2731H6213H3426H1696H4428H8269H6635H559H3427H8432H597114He said, "What then may be done for her?" Gehazi answered, "Well, she has no son, and her husband is old."H559H6213H1522H559H61H1121H376H220415He said, "Call her." When he had called her, she stood at the door.H559H7121H7121H5975H660716He said, "At this season, in due time, you shall embrace a son." She replied, "No, my lord, O man of God; do not deceive your servant."H559H4150H6256H2416H2263H1121H559H113H376H430H3576H819817The woman conceived and bore a son at that season, in due time, as Elisha had declared to her.H802H2029H3205H1121H4150H477H1696H6256H241618When the child was older, he went out one day to his father among the reapers.H3206H1431H3117H3318H1H711419He complained to his father, "Oh, my head, my head!" The father said to his servant, "Carry him to his mother."H559H1H7218H7218H559H5288H5375H51720He carried him and brought him to his mother; the child sat on her lap until noon, and he died.H5375H935H517H3427H1290H6672H419121She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, closed the door on him, and left.H5927H7901H4296H376H430H5462H331822Then she called to her husband, and said, "Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so that I may quickly go to the man of God and come back again."H7121H376H559H7971H259H5288H259H860H7323H376H430H772523He said, "Why go to him today? It is neither new moon nor sabbath." She said, "It will be all right."H559H1980H3117H2320H7676H559H796524Then she saddled the donkey and said to her servant, "Urge the animal on; do not hold back for me unless I tell you."H2280H860H559H5288H5090H3212H6113H7392H55925So she set out, and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her coming, he said to Gehazi his servant, "Look, there is the Shunammite woman;H3212H935H376H430H2022H3760H376H430H7200H559H1522H5288H1975H776726run at once to meet her, and say to her, Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is the child all right?" She answered, "It is all right."H7323H7125H559H7965H7965H376H7965H3206H559H796527When she came to the man of God at the mountain, she caught hold of his feet. Gehazi approached to push her away. But the man of God said, "Let her alone, for she is in bitter distress; the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me."H935H376H430H2022H2388H7272H1522H5066H1920H376H430H559H7503H5315H4843H3068H5956H504628Then she said, "Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say, Do not mislead me?"H559H7592H1121H113H559H795229He said to Gehazi, "Gird up your loins, and take my staff in your hand, and go. If you meet anyone, give no greeting, and if anyone greets you, do not answer; and lay my staff on the face of the child."H559H1522H2296H4975H3947H4938H3027H3212H4672H376H1288H376H1288H6030H7760H4938H6440H528830Then the mother of the child said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave without you." So he rose up and followed her.H517H5288H559H3068H2416H5315H2416H5800H6965H3212H31031Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the face of the child, but there was no sound or sign of life. He came back to meet him and told him, "The child has not awakened."H1522H5674H6440H7760H4938H6440H5288H6963H7182H7725H7125H5046H559H5288H697432When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed.H477H935H1004H5288H4191H7901H429633So he went in and closed the door on the two of them, and prayed to the LORD.H935H5462H1817H8147H6419H306834Then he got up on the bed and lay upon the child, putting his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and while he lay bent over him, the flesh of the child became warm.H5927H7901H3206H7760H6310H6310H5869H5869H3709H3709H1457H1320H3206H255235He got down, walked once to and fro in the room, then got up again and bent over him; the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.H7725H3212H1004H259H2008H259H2008H5927H1457H5288H2237H7651H6471H5288H6491H586936Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, "Call the Shunammite woman." So he called her. When she came to him, he said, "Take your son."H7121H1522H559H7121H7767H7121H935H559H5375H112137She came and fell at his feet, bowing to the ground; then she took her son and left.H935H5307H7272H7812H776H5375H1121H3318

38When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. As the company of prophets was sitting before him, he said to his servant, "Put the large pot on, and make some stew for the company of prophets."H477H7725H1537H7458H776H1121H5030H3427H6440H559H5288H8239H1419H5518H1310H5138H1121H503039One of them went out into the field to gather herbs; he found a wild vine and gathered from it a lapful of wild gourds, and came and cut them up into the pot of stew, not knowing what they were.H259H3318H7704H3950H219H4672H7704H1612H3950H7704H6498H899H4393H935H6398H5518H5138H304540They served some for the men to eat. But while they were eating the stew, they cried out, "O man of God, there is death in the pot!" They could not eat it.H3332H582H398H398H5138H6817H559H376H430H4194H5518H3201H39841He said, "Then bring some flour." He threw it into the pot, and said, "Serve the people and let them eat." And there was nothing harmful in the pot.H559H3947H7058H7993H5518H559H3332H5971H398H1697H7451H5518

Elisha Feeds One Hundred Men

42A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing food from the first fruits to the man of God: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. Elisha said, "Give it to the people and let them eat."H935H376H1190H935H376H430H3899H1061H6242H3899H8184H3759H6861H559H5414H5971H39843But his servant said, "How can I set this before a hundred people?" So he repeated, "Give it to the people and let them eat, for thus says the LORD, 'They shall eat and have some left.'"H8334H559H5414H6440H3967H376H559H5414H5971H398H559H3068H398H349844He set it before them, they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the LORD.H5414H6440H398H3498H1697H3068

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
