Signs of the Lord’s Power

4But Moses protested again, "What if they won't believe me or listen to me? What if they say, 'The LORD never appeared to you'?"H4872H6030H559H539H8085H6963H559H3068H72002Then the LORD asked him, "What is that in your hand?" "A shepherd's staff," Moses replied.H3068H559H3027H559H42943"Throw it down on the ground," the LORD told him. So Moses threw down the staff, and it turned into a snake! Moses jumped back.H559H7993H776H7993H776H5175H4872H5127H64404Then the LORD told him, "Reach out and grab its tail." So Moses reached out and grabbed it, and it turned back into a shepherd's staff in his hand.H3068H559H4872H7971H3027H270H2180H7971H3027H2388H4294H37095"Perform this sign," the LORD told him. "Then they will believe that the LORD, the God of their ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—really has appeared to you."H539H3068H430H1H430H85H430H3327H430H3290H72006Then the LORD said to Moses, "Now put your hand inside your cloak." So Moses put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out again, his hand was white as snow with a severe skin diseasec.H3068H559H5750H935H3027H2436H935H3027H2436H3318H3027H6879H79507"Now put your hand back into your cloak," the LORD said. So Moses put his hand back in, and when he took it out again, it was as healthy as the rest of his body.H559H7725H3027H2436H7725H7725H3027H2436H7725H3318H2436H7725H13208The LORD said to Moses, "If they do not believe you and are not convinced by the first miraculous sign, they will be convinced by the second sign.H539H8085H6963H7223H226H539H6963H314H2269And if they don't believe you or listen to you even after these two signs, then take some water from the Nile River and pour it out on the dry ground. When you do, the water from the Nile will turn to blood on the ground."H539H8147H226H8085H6963H3947H4325H2975H8210H3004H4325H3947H2975H1818H300610But Moses pleaded with the LORD, "O Lord, I'm not very good with words. I never have been, and I'm not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled."H4872H559H3068H994H136H376H1697H8032H8543H227H1696H5650H3515H6310H3515H395611Then the LORD asked Moses, "Who makes a person's mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak, hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the LORD?H3068H559H7760H120H6310H7760H483H2795H6493H5787H306812Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say."H3212H6310H3384H169613But Moses again pleaded, "Lord, please! Send anyone else."H559H994H136H7971H3027H797114Then the LORD became angry with Moses. "All right," he said. "What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he speaks well. And look! He is on his way to meet you now. He will be delighted to see you.H639H3068H2734H4872H559H175H3881H251H3045H1696H1696H3318H7125H7200H8055H382015Talk to him, and put the words in his mouth. I will be with both of you as you speak, and I will instruct you both in what to do.H1696H7760H1697H6310H6310H6310H3384H621316Aaron will be your spokesman to the people. He will be your mouthpiece, and you will stand in the place of God for him, telling him what to say.H1696H5971H6310H43017And take your shepherd's staff with you, and use it to perform the miraculous signs I have shown you."H3947H4294H3027H6213H226

Moses Returns to Egypt

18So Moses went back home to Jethro, his father-in-law. "Please let me return to my relatives in Egypt," Moses said. "I don't even know if they are still alive." "Go in peace," Jethro replied.H4872H3212H7725H3500H2859H559H3212H7725H251H4714H7200H5750H2416H3503H559H4872H3212H796519Before Moses left Midian, the LORD said to him, "Return to Egypt, for all those who wanted to kill you have died."H3068H559H4872H4080H3212H7725H4714H582H4191H1245H531520So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and headed back to the land of Egypt. In his hand he carried the staff of God.H4872H3947H802H1121H7392H2543H7725H776H4714H4872H3947H4294H430H302721And the LORD told Moses, "When you arrive back in Egypt, go to Pharaoh and perform all the miracles I have empowered you to do. But I will harden his heart so he will refuse to let the people go.H3068H559H4872H3212H7725H4714H7200H6213H4159H6440H6547H7760H3027H2388H3820H5971H797122Then you will tell him, 'This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son.H559H6547H559H3068H3478H1121H106023I commanded you, "Let my son go, so he can worship me." But since you have refused, I will now kill your firstborn son!'"H559H1121H7971H5647H3985H7971H2026H1121H106024On the way to Egypt, at a place where Moses and his family had stopped for the night, the LORD confronted him and was about to kill him.H1870H4411H3068H6298H1245H419125But Moses' wife, Zipporah, took a flint knife and circumcised her son. She touched his feetc with the foreskin and said, "Now you are a bridegroom of blood to me."H6855H3947H6864H3772H6190H1121H5060H7272H559H1818H286026(When she said "a bridegroom of blood," she was referring to the circumcision.) After that, the LORD left him alone.H7503H559H1818H2860H413927Now the LORD had said to Aaron, "Go out into the wilderness to meet Moses." So Aaron went and met Moses at the mountain of God, and he embraced him.H3068H559H175H3212H4057H7125H4872H3212H6298H2022H430H540128Moses then told Aaron everything the LORD had commanded him to say. And he told him about the miraculous signs the LORD had commanded him to perform.H4872H5046H175H1697H3068H7971H226H668029Then Moses and Aaron returned to Egypt and called all the elders of Israel together.H4872H175H3212H622H2205H1121H347830Aaron told them everything the LORD had told Moses, and Moses performed the miraculous signs as they watched.H175H1696H1697H3068H1696H4872H6213H226H5869H597131Then the people of Israel were convinced that the LORD had sent Moses and Aaron. When they heard that the LORD was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.H5971H539H8085H3068H6485H1121H3478H7200H6040H6915H7812

Exodus 5

Moses and Aaron Speak to Pharaoh

5After this presentation to Israel's leaders, Moses and Aaron went and spoke to Pharaoh. They told him, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Let my people go so they may hold a festival in my honor in the wilderness."H310H4872H175H935H559H6547H559H3068H430H3478H5971H7971H2287H40572"Is that so?" retorted Pharaoh. "And who is the LORD? Why should I listen to him and let Israel go? I don't know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go."H6547H559H3068H8085H6963H3478H7971H3045H3068H3478H79713But Aaron and Moses persisted. "The God of the Hebrews has met with us," they declared. "So let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness so we can offer sacrifices to the LORD our God. If we don't, he will kill us with a plague or with the sword."H559H430H5680H7122H3212H7969H3117H1870H4057H2076H3068H430H6293H1698H27194Pharaoh replied, "Moses and Aaron, why are you distracting the people from their tasks? Get back to work!H4428H4714H559H4872H175H6544H5971H4639H3212H54505Look, there are many of your people in the land, and you are stopping them from their work."H6547H559H5971H776H7227H7673H5450

Making Bricks without Straw

6That same day Pharaoh sent this order to the Egyptian slave drivers and the Israelite foremen.H6547H6680H3117H5065H5971H7860H5597"Do not supply any more straw for making bricks. Make the people get it themselves!H3254H5414H5971H8401H3835H3843H8032H8543H3212H7197H84018But still require them to make the same number of bricks as before. Don't reduce the quota. They are lazy. That's why they are crying out, 'Let us go and offer sacrifices to our God.'H4971H3843H6213H8032H8543H7760H1639H7503H6817H559H3212H2076H4309Load them down with more work. Make them sweat! That will teach them to listen to lies!"H5656H3513H582H6213H8159H8267H169710So the slave drivers and foremen went out and told the people: "This is what Pharaoh says: I will not provide any more straw for you.H5065H5971H3318H7860H559H5971H559H559H6547H5414H840111Go and get it yourselves. Find it wherever you can. But you must produce just as many bricks as before!"H3212H3947H8401H834H4672H3588H1697H5656H163912So the people scattered throughout the land of Egypt in search of stubble to use as straw.H5971H6327H776H4714H7197H7179H840113Meanwhile, the Egyptian slave drivers continued to push hard. "Meet your daily quota of bricks, just as you did when we provided you with straw!" they demanded.H5065H213H559H3615H4639H3117H1697H1961H840114Then they whipped the Israelite foremen they had put in charge of the work crews. "Why haven't you met your quotas either yesterday or today?" they demanded.H7860H1121H3478H6547H5065H7760H5221H559H3615H2706H3835H8543H3117H8032H854315So the Israelite foremen went to Pharaoh and pleaded with him. "Please don't treat your servants like this," they begged.H7860H1121H3478H935H6817H6547H559H6213H565016"We are given no straw, but the slave drivers still demand, 'Make bricks!' We are being beaten, but it isn't our fault! Your own people are to blame!"H8401H5414H5650H559H6213H3843H5650H5221H2398H597117But Pharaoh shouted, "You're just lazy! Lazy! That's why you're saying, 'Let us go and offer sacrifices to the LORD.'H559H7503H7503H559H3212H2076H306818Now get back to work! No straw will be given to you, but you must still produce the full quota of bricks."H3212H5647H8401H5414H5414H8506H384319The Israelite foremen could see that they were in serious trouble when they were told, "You must not reduce the number of bricks you make each day."H7860H1121H3478H7200H7451H559H1639H3843H3117H3117H169720As they left Pharaoh's court, they confronted Moses and Aaron, who were waiting outside for them.H6293H4872H175H5324H7125H3318H654721The foremen said to them, "May the LORD judge and punish you for making us stink before Pharaoh and his officials. You have put a sword into their hands, an excuse to kill us!"H559H3068H7200H8199H7381H887H5869H6547H5869H5650H5414H2719H3027H202622Then Moses went back to the LORD and protested, "Why have you brought all this trouble on your own people, Lord? Why did you send me?H4872H7725H3068H559H136H7489H5971H797123Ever since I came to Pharaoh as your spokesman, he has been even more brutal to your people. And you have done nothing to rescue them!"H935H6547H1696H8034H7489H5971H5337H5971H5337

Exodus 6

Promises of Deliverance

6Then the LORD told Moses, "Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh. When he feels the force of my strong hand, he will let the people go. In fact, he will force them to leave his land!"H3068H559H4872H7200H6213H6547H2389H3027H7971H2389H3027H1644H776 2And God said to Moses, "I am Yahweh—'the LORD.'cH430H1696H4872H559H3068 3I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as El-Shaddai—'God Almighty'c—but I did not reveal my name, Yahweh, to them.H7200H85H3327H3290H410H7706H8034H3068H3045 4And I reaffirmed my covenant with them. Under its terms, I promised to give them the land of Canaan, where they were living as foreigners.H6965H1285H5414H776H3667H776H4033H1481 5You can be sure that I have heard the groans of the people of Israel, who are now slaves to the Egyptians. And I am well aware of my covenant with them.H8085H5009H1121H3478H834H4714H5647H2142H1285 6"Therefore, say to the people of Israel: 'I am the LORD. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment.H3651H559H1121H3478H3068H3318H5450H4714H5337H5656H1350H5186H2220H1419H8201 7I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt.H3947H5971H430H3045H3068H430H3318H5450H4714 8I will bring you into the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as your very own possession. I am the LORD!'"H935H776H5375H3027H5414H85H3327H3290H5414H4181H3068 9So Moses told the people of Israel what the LORD had said, but they refused to listen anymore. They had become too discouraged by the brutality of their slavery.H4872H1696H1121H3478H8085H4872H7115H7307H7186H5656 10Then the LORD said to Moses,H3068H1696H4872H559 11"Go back to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and tell him to let the people of Israel leave his country."H935H1696H6547H4428H4714H1121H3478H7971H776 12"But LORD!" Moses objected. "My own people won't listen to me anymore. How can I expect Pharaoh to listen? I'm such a clumsy speaker!c"H4872H1696H6440H3068H559H1121H3478H8085H6547H8085H589H6189H8193 13But the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them orders for the Israelites and for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. The LORD commanded Moses and Aaron to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt.H3068H1696H4872H175H6680H1121H3478H6547H4428H4714H3318H1121H3478H776H4714
