Genesis 37

Joseph’s Dreams

37So Jacob settled again in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived as a foreigner.H3290H3427H776H1H4033H776H36672This is the account of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he often tended his father's flocks. He worked for his half brothers, the sons of his father's wives Bilhah and Zilpah. But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing.H8435H3290H3130H6240H7651H8141H1121H7462H6629H251H5288H1121H1090H1121H2153H1H802H3130H935H1H7451H16813Jacobc loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe.H3478H157H3130H1121H1121H2208H6213H3801H64464But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn't say a kind word to him.H251H7200H1H157H251H8130H3201H1696H79655One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever.H3130H2492H2472H5046H251H8130H32546"Listen to this dream," he said.H559H8085H2472H24927"We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!"H481H8432H485H7704H485H6965H5324H485H5437H7812H4858His brothers responded, "So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them.H251H559H4427H4427H4910H4910H8130H3254H2472H16979Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it. "Listen, I have had another dream," he said. "The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!"H2492H312H2472H5608H251H559H2492H2472H8121H3394H6240H259H3556H781210This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. "What kind of dream is that?" he asked. "Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?"H5608H1H251H1H1605H559H2472H2492H517H251H935H935H7812H77611But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant.H251H7065H1H8104H169712Soon after this, Joseph's brothers went to pasture their father's flocks at Shechem.H251H3212H7462H1H6629H792713When they had been gone for some time, Jacob said to Joseph, "Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Get ready, and I will send you to them." "I'm ready to go," Joseph replied.H3478H559H3130H251H7462H7927H3212H7971H55914"Go and see how your brothers and the flocks are getting along," Jacob said. "Then come back and bring me a report." So Jacob sent him on his way, and Joseph traveled to Shechem from their home in the valley of Hebron.H559H3212H7200H7965H251H7965H6629H7725H1697H7725H7971H6010H2275H935H792715When he arrived there, a man from the area noticed him wandering around the countryside. "What are you looking for?" he asked.H376H4672H8582H7704H376H7592H559H124516"I'm looking for my brothers," Joseph replied. "Do you know where they are pasturing their sheep?"H559H1245H251H5046H375H746217"Yes," the man told him. "They have moved on from here, but I heard them say, 'Let's go on to Dothan.'" So Joseph followed his brothers to Dothan and found them there.H376H559H5265H2088H8085H559H3212H1886H3130H3212H310H251H4672H1886

Joseph Sold into Slavery

18When Joseph's brothers saw him coming, they recognized him in the distance. As he approached, they made plans to kill him.H7200H7350H7126H5230H419119"Here comes the dreamer!" they said.H559H376H251H1976H1167H2472H93520"Come on, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns. We can tell our father, 'A wild animal has eaten him.' Then we'll see what becomes of his dreams!"H3212H2026H7993H259H953H559H7451H2416H398H7200H247221But when Reuben heard of their scheme, he came to Joseph's rescue. "Let's not kill him," he said.H7205H8085H5337H3027H559H5221H531522"Why should we shed any blood? Let's just throw him into this empty cistern here in the wilderness. Then he'll die without our laying a hand on him." Reuben was secretly planning to rescue Joseph and return him to his father.H7205H559H8210H1818H7993H953H4057H7971H3027H5337H3027H7725H1H772523So when Joseph arrived, his brothers ripped off the beautiful robe he was wearing.H3130H935H251H6584H853H3130H854H3801H3801H644624Then they grabbed him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.H3947H7993H953H953H7386H432525Then, just as they were sitting down to eat, they looked up and saw a caravan of camels in the distance coming toward them. It was a group of Ishmaelite traders taking a load of gum, balm, and aromatic resin from Gilead down to Egypt.H3427H398H3899H5375H5869H7200H736H3459H935H1568H1581H5375H5219H6875H3910H1980H3381H471426Judah said to his brothers, "What will we gain by killing our brother? We'd have to cover up the crimec.H3063H559H251H1215H2026H251H3680H181827Instead of hurting him, let's sell him to those Ishmaelite traders. After all, he is our brother—our own flesh and blood!" And his brothers agreed.H3212H4376H3459H3027H251H1320H251H808528So when the Ishmaelites, who were Midianite traders, came by, Joseph's brothers pulled him out of the cistern and sold him to them for twenty piecesc of silver. And the traders took him to Egypt.H5674H4084H582H5503H4900H5927H3130H953H4376H3130H3459H6242H3701H935H3130H471429Some time later, Reuben returned to get Joseph out of the cistern. When he discovered that Joseph was missing, he tore his clothes in grief.H7205H7725H953H3130H953H7167H89930Then he went back to his brothers and lamented, "The boy is gone! What will I do now?"H7725H251H559H3206H575H93531Then the brothers killed a young goat and dipped Joseph's robe in its blood.H3947H3130H3801H7819H8163H5795H2881H3801H181832They sent the beautiful robe to their father with this message: "Look at what we found. Doesn't this robe belong to your son?"H7971H3801H6446H935H1H559H4672H5234H1121H380133Their father recognized it immediately. "Yes," he said, "it is my son's robe. A wild animal must have eaten him. Joseph has clearly been torn to pieces!"H5234H559H1121H3801H7451H2416H398H3130H2963H296334Then Jacob tore his clothes and dressed himself in burlap. He mourned deeply for his son for a long time.H3290H7167H8071H7760H8242H4975H56H1121H7227H311735His family all tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. "I will go to my gravec mourning for my son," he would say, and then he would weep.H1121H1323H6965H5162H3985H5162H559H3381H7585H1121H57H1H105836Meanwhile, the Midianite tradersc arrived in Egypt, where they sold Joseph to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Potiphar was captain of the palace guard.H4092H4376H4714H6318H5631H6547H8269H2876

Judah and Tamar

38About this time, Judah left home and moved to Adullam, where he stayed with a man named Hirah.H6256H3063H3381H251H5186H376H5726H8034H24372There he saw a Canaanite woman, the daughter of Shua, and he married her. When he slept with her,H3063H7200H1323H376H3669H8034H7770H3947H9353she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and he named the boy Er.H2029H3205H1121H7121H8034H61474Then she became pregnant again and gave birth to another son, and she named him Onan.H2029H3205H1121H7121H8034H2095And when she gave birth to a third son, she named him Shelah. At the time of Shelah's birth, they were living at Kezib.H3254H3205H1121H7121H8034H7956H3580H32056In the course of time, Judah arranged for his firstborn son, Er, to marry a young woman named Tamar.H3063H3947H802H6147H1060H8034H85597But Er was a wicked man in the LORD's sight, so the LORD took his life.H6147H3063H1060H7451H5869H3068H3068H41918Then Judah said to Er's brother Onan, "Go and marry Tamar, as our law requires of the brother of a man who has died. You must produce an heir for your brother."H3063H559H209H935H251H802H2992H6965H2233H2519But Onan was not willing to have a child who would not be his own heir. So whenever he had intercourse with his brother's wife, he spilled the semen on the ground. This prevented her from having a child who would belong to his brother.H209H3045H2233H518H935H251H802H7843H776H1115H5414H2233H25110But the LORD considered it evil for Onan to deny a child to his dead brother. So the LORD took Onan's life, too.H834H6213H3415H5869H3068H419111Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, "Go back to your parents' home and remain a widow until my son Shelah is old enough to marry you." (But Judah didn't really intend to do this because he was afraid Shelah would also die, like his two brothers.) So Tamar went back to live in her father's home.H559H3063H8559H3618H3427H490H1H1004H7956H1121H1431H559H4191H251H8559H3212H3427H1H100412Some years later Judah's wife died. After the time of mourning was over, Judah and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to Timnah to supervise the shearing of his sheep.H7235H3117H1323H7770H3063H802H4191H3063H5162H5927H1494H6629H8553H7453H2437H572613Someone told Tamar, "Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep."H5046H8559H559H2524H5927H8553H1494H662914Tamar was aware that Shelah had grown up, but no arrangements had been made for her to come and marry him. So she changed out of her widow's clothing and covered herself with a veil to disguise herself. Then she sat beside the road at the entrance to the village of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah.H5493H491H899H5493H3680H6809H5968H3427H5869H6607H1870H8553H7200H7956H1431H5414H80215Judah noticed her and thought she was a prostitute, since she had covered her face.H3063H7200H2803H2181H3680H644016So he stopped and propositioned her. "Let me have sex with you," he said, not realizing that she was his own daughter-in-law. "How much will you pay to have sex with me?" Tamar asked.H5186H1870H559H3051H935H3045H3618H559H5414H93517"I'll send you a young goat from my flock," Judah promised. "But what will you give me to guarantee that you will send the goat?" she asked.H559H7971H5795H1423H6629H559H5414H6162H797118"What kind of guarantee do you want?" he replied. She answered, "Leave me your identification seal and its cord and the walking stick you are carrying." So Judah gave them to her. Then he had intercourse with her, and she became pregnant.H559H834H6162H5414H559H2368H6616H4294H3027H5414H935H202919Afterward she went back home, took off her veil, and put on her widow's clothing as usual.H6965H3212H5493H6809H3847H899H49120Later Judah asked his friend Hirah the Adullamite to take the young goat to the woman and to pick up the things he had given her as his guarantee. But Hirah couldn't find her.H3063H7971H1423H5795H3027H7453H5726H3947H6162H802H3027H467221So he asked the men who lived there, "Where can I find the shrine prostitute who was sitting beside the road at the entrance to Enaim?" "We've never had a shrine prostitute here," they replied.H7592H582H4725H559H6948H5869H1870H559H6948H208822So Hirah returned to Judah and told him, "I couldn't find her anywhere, and the men of the village claim they've never had a shrine prostitute there."H7725H3063H559H3808H4672H582H4725H559H694823"Then let her keep the things I gave her," Judah said. "I sent the young goat as we agreed, but you couldn't find her. We'd be the laughingstock of the village if we went back again to look for her."H3063H559H3947H937H7971H1423H467224About three months later, Judah was told, "Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has acted like a prostitute. And now, because of this, she's pregnant." "Bring her out, and let her be burned!" Judah demanded.H7969H2320H5046H3063H559H8559H3618H2181H2030H2183H3063H559H3318H831325But as they were taking her out to kill her, she sent this message to her father-in-law: "The man who owns these things made me pregnant. Look closely. Whose seal and cord and walking stick are these?"H3318H7971H2524H559H376H2030H559H5234H2858H6616H429426Judah recognized them immediately and said, "She is more righteous than I am, because I didn't arrange for her to marry my son Shelah." And Judah never slept with Tamar again.H3063H5234H559H6663H5414H7956H1121H3045H325427When the time came for Tamar to give birth, it was discovered that she was carrying twins.H6256H3205H8380H99028While she was in labor, one of the babies reached out his hand. The midwife grabbed it and tied a scarlet string around the child's wrist, announcing, "This one came out first."H3205H5414H3027H3205H3947H7194H3027H8144H559H3318H722329But then he pulled back his hand, and out came his brother! "What!" the midwife exclaimed. "How did you break out first?" So he was named Perezc.H7725H3027H251H3318H559H6555H6556H8034H7121H655730Then the baby with the scarlet string on his wrist was born, and he was named Zerahc.H310H3318H251H8144H3027H8034H7121H2226
