Preparing to Move the Ark

15David now built several buildings for himself in the City of David. He also prepared a place for the Ark of God and set up a special tent for it.H6213H1004H5892H1732H3559H4725H727H430H5186H1682Then he commanded, "No one except the Levites may carry the Ark of God. The LORD has chosen them to carry the Ark of the LORD and to serve him forever."H1732H559H5375H727H430H3881H3068H977H5375H727H430H8334H5704H57693Then David summoned all Israel to Jerusalem to bring the Ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it.H1732H6950H3478H6950H3389H5927H727H3068H4725H35594This is the number of the descendants of Aaron (the priests) and the Levites who were called together.H1732H622H1121H175H38815From the clan of Kohath, 120, with Uriel as their leader.H1121H6955H222H8269H251H3967H62426From the clan of Merari, 220, with Asaiah as their leader.H1121H4847H6222H8269H251H3967H62427From the clan of Gershonc, 130, with Joel as their leader.H1121H1647H3100H8269H251H3967H79708From the descendants of Elizaphan, 200, with Shemaiah as their leader.H1121H469H8098H8269H251H39679From the descendants of Hebron, 80, with Eliel as their leader.H1121H2275H447H8269H251H808410From the descendants of Uzziel, 112, with Amminadab as their leader.H1121H5816H5992H8269H251H3967H8147H624011Then David summoned the priests, Zadok and Abiathar, and these Levite leaders: Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.H1732H7121H6659H54H3548H3881H222H6222H3100H8098H447H599212He said to them, "You are the leaders of the Levite families. You must purify yourselves and all your fellow Levites, so you can bring the Ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it.H559H7218H1H3881H6942H251H5927H727H3068H430H3478H355913Because you Levites did not carry the Ark the first time, the anger of the LORD our God burst out against us. We failed to ask God how to move it properly."H7223H3068H430H6555H1875H494114So the priests and the Levites purified themselves in order to bring the Ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to Jerusalem.H3548H3881H6942H5927H727H3068H430H347815Then the Levites carried the Ark of God on their shoulders with its carrying poles, just as the LORD had instructed Moses.H1121H3881H5375H727H430H3802H4133H4872H6680H1697H306816David also ordered the Levite leaders to appoint a choir of Levites who were singers and musicians to sing joyful songs to the accompaniment of harps, lyres, and cymbals.H1732H559H8269H3881H5975H251H7891H3627H7892H5035H3658H4700H8085H7311H6963H805717So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel along with his fellow Levites: Asaph son of Berekiah, and Ethan son of Kushaiah from the clan of Merari.H3881H5975H1968H1121H3100H251H623H1121H1296H1121H4847H251H387H1121H698418The following men were chosen as their assistants: Zechariah, Jaazielc, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers—Obed-edom and Jeiel.H251H4932H2148H1122H3268H8070H3171H6042H446H1141H4641H4993H466H4737H5654H3273H777819The musicians Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were chosen to sound the bronze cymbals.H7891H1968H623H387H8085H4700H517820Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were chosen to play the harpsc.H2148H5815H8070H3171H6042H446H4641H1141H5035H596121Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were chosen to play the lyresc.H4993H466H4737H5654H3273H5812H3658H8067H532922Kenaniah, the head Levite, was chosen as the choir leader because of his skill.H3663H8269H3881H4853H3256H4853H99523Berekiah and Elkanah were chosen to guardc the Ark.H1296H511H7778H72724Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer—all of whom were priests—were chosen to blow the trumpets as they marched in front of the Ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah were chosen to guard the Ark.H7645H3146H5417H6022H2148H1141H461H3548H2690H2690H2689H6440H727H430H5654H3174H7778H727

Moving the Ark to Jerusalem

25Then David and the elders of Israel and the generals of the armyc went to the house of Obed-edom to bring the Ark of the LORD's Covenant up to Jerusalem with a great celebration.H1732H2205H3478H8269H505H1980H5927H727H1285H3068H1004H5654H805726And because God was clearly helping the Levites as they carried the Ark of the LORD's Covenant, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.H430H5826H3881H5375H727H1285H3068H2076H7651H6499H7651H35227David was dressed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who carried the Ark, and also the singers, and Kenaniah the choir leader. David was also wearing a priestly garmentc.H1732H3736H4598H948H3881H5375H727H7891H3663H8269H4853H7891H1732H646H90628So all Israel brought up the Ark of the LORD's Covenant with shouts of joy, the blowing of rams' horns and trumpets, the crashing of cymbals, and loud playing on harps and lyres.H3478H5927H727H1285H3068H8643H6963H7782H2689H4700H8085H5035H365829But as the Ark of the LORD's Covenant entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David skipping about and laughing with joy, she was filled with contempt for him.H727H1285H3068H935H5892H1732H4324H1323H7586H8259H2474H7200H4428H1732H7540H7832H959H3820

1Chronicles 17

The Lord’s Covenant Promise to David

17When David was settled in his palace, he summoned Nathan the prophet. "Look," David said, "I am living in a beautiful cedar palacec, but the Ark of the LORD's Covenant is out there under a tent!"H1732H3427H1004H1732H559H5416H5030H3427H1004H730H727H1285H3068H34072Nathan replied to David, "Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you."H5416H559H1732H6213H3824H4303But that same night God said to Nathan,H3915H1697H430H5416H5594"Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD has declared: You are not the one to build a house for me to live in.H3212H559H1732H5650H559H3068H1129H1004H34275I have never lived in a house, from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until this very day. My home has always been a tent, moving from one place to another in a Tabernacle.H3427H1004H3117H5927H3478H3117H168H168H49086Yet no matter where I have gone with the Israelites, I have never once complained to Israel's leadersc, the shepherds of my people. I have never asked them, "Why haven't you built me a beautiful cedar house?"'H1980H3478H1696H1697H259H8199H3478H6680H7462H5971H559H1129H1004H7307"Now go and say to my servant David, 'This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel.H559H5650H1732H559H3068H6635H3947H5116H310H6629H5057H5971H34788I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth!H1980H3772H341H6440H6213H8034H8034H1419H7769And I will provide a homeland for my people Israel, planting them in a secure place where they will never be disturbed. Evil nations won't oppress them as they've done in the past,H7760H4725H5971H3478H5193H7931H7264H1121H5766H1086H3254H722310starting from the time I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. And I will defeat all your enemies."'Furthermore, I declare that the LORD will build a house for you—a dynasty of kings!H3117H6680H8199H5971H3478H3665H341H5046H3068H1129H100411For when you die and join your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, one of your sons, and I will make his kingdom strong.H3117H4390H3212H1H6965H2233H310H1121H3559H443812He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for me. And I will secure his throne forever.H1129H1004H3559H3678H5704H576913I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my favor from him as I took it from the one who ruled before you.H1H1121H5493H2617H5493H5493H644014I will confirm him as king over my house and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.'"H5975H1004H4438H5769H3678H3559H5704H576915So Nathan went back to David and told him everything the LORD had said in this vision.H1697H2377H5416H1696H1732

David’s Prayer of Thanks
