Leviticus 16

The Day of Atonement

16The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of Aaron's two sons, who died after they entered the LORD's presence and burned the wrong kind of fire before him.H3068H1696H4872H310H4194H8147H1121H175H7126H6440H3068H41912The LORD said to Moses, "Warn your brother, Aaron, not to enter the Most Holy Place behind the inner curtain whenever he chooses; if he does, he will die. For the Ark's cover—the place of atonement—is there, and I myself am present in the cloud above the atonement cover.H3068H559H4872H1696H175H251H935H6256H6944H1004H6532H6440H3727H727H4191H7200H6051H37273"When Aaron enters the sanctuary area, he must follow these instructions fully. He must bring a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.H2063H175H935H6944H1121H1241H6499H2403H352H59304He must put on his linen tunic and the linen undergarments worn next to his body. He must tie the linen sash around his waist and put the linen turban on his head. These are sacred garments, so he must bathe himself in water before he puts them on.H3847H6944H906H3801H906H4370H1320H2296H906H73H906H4701H6801H1992H6944H899H7364H1320H4325H38475Aaron must take from the community of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.H3947H5712H1121H3478H8147H8163H5795H2403H259H352H59306"Aaron will present his own bull as a sin offering to purify himself and his family, making them right with the LORDc.H175H7126H6499H2403H1157H3722H10047Then he must take the two male goats and present them to the LORD at the entrance of the Tabernaclec.H3947H8147H8163H5975H6440H3068H6607H168H41508He is to cast sacred lots to determine which goat will be reserved as an offering to the LORD and which will carry the sins of the people to the wilderness of Azazel.H175H5414H1486H8147H8163H259H1486H3068H259H1486H57999Aaron will then present as a sin offering the goat chosen by lot for the LORD.H175H7126H8163H3068H1486H5927H6213H240310The other goat, the scapegoat chosen by lot to be sent away, will be kept alive, standing before the LORD. When it is sent away to Azazel in the wilderness, the people will be purified and made right with the LORDc.H8163H1486H5927H5799H5975H2416H6440H3068H3722H7971H5799H405711"Aaron will present his own bull as a sin offering to purify himself and his family, making them right with the LORD. After he has slaughtered the bull as a sin offering,H175H7126H6499H2403H3722H1004H7819H6499H240312he will fill an incense burner with burning coals from the altar that stands before the LORD. Then he will take two handfuls of fragrant powdered incense and will carry the burner and the incense behind the inner curtain.H3947H4289H4393H784H1513H784H4196H6440H3068H2651H4393H5561H7004H1851H935H1004H653213There in the LORD's presence he will put the incense on the burning coals so that a cloud of incense will rise over the Ark's cover—the place of atonement—that rests on the Ark of the Covenantc. If he follows these instructions, he will not die.H5414H7004H784H6440H3068H6051H7004H3680H3727H5715H419114Then he must take some of the blood of the bull, dip his finger in it, and sprinkle it on the east side of the atonement cover. He must sprinkle blood seven times with his finger in front of the atonement cover.H3947H1818H6499H5137H676H3727H6924H6440H3727H5137H1818H676H7651H647115"Then Aaron must slaughter the first goat as a sin offering for the people and carry its blood behind the inner curtain. There he will sprinkle the goat's blood over the atonement cover and in front of it, just as he did with the bull's blood.H7819H8163H2403H5971H935H1818H1004H6532H6213H1818H6213H1818H6499H5137H3727H6440H372716Through this process, he will purifyc the Most Holy Place, and he will do the same for the entire Tabernacle, because of the defiling sin and rebellion of the Israelites.H3722H6944H2932H1121H3478H6588H2403H6213H168H4150H7931H8432H293217No one else is allowed inside the Tabernacle when Aaron enters it for the purification ceremony in the Most Holy Place. No one may enter until he comes out again after purifying himself, his family, and all the congregation of Israel, making them right with the LORD.H120H168H4150H935H3722H6944H3318H3722H1004H6951H347818"Then Aaron will come out to purify the altar that stands before the LORD. He will do this by taking some of the blood from the bull and the goat and putting it on each of the horns of the altar.H3318H4196H6440H3068H3722H3947H1818H6499H1818H8163H5414H7161H4196H543919Then he must sprinkle the blood with his finger seven times over the altar. In this way, he will cleanse it from Israel's defilement and make it holy.H5137H1818H676H7651H6471H2891H6942H2932H1121H347820"When Aaron has finished purifying the Most Holy Place and the Tabernacle and the altar, he must present the live goat.H3615H3722H6944H168H4150H4196H7126H2416H816321He will lay both of his hands on the goat's head and confess over it all the wickedness, rebellion, and sins of the people of Israel. In this way, he will transfer the people's sins to the head of the goat. Then a man specially chosen for the task will drive the goat into the wilderness.H175H5564H8147H3027H7218H2416H8163H3034H5771H1121H3478H6588H2403H5414H7218H8163H7971H3027H6261H376H405722As the goat goes into the wilderness, it will carry all the people's sins upon itself into a desolate land.H8163H5375H5771H776H1509H7971H8163H405723"When Aaron goes back into the Tabernacle, he must take off the linen garments he was wearing when he entered the Most Holy Place, and he must leave the garments there.H175H935H168H4150H6584H906H899H3847H935H6944H324024Then he must bathe himself with water in a sacred place, put on his regular garments, and go out to sacrifice a burnt offering for himself and a burnt offering for the people. Through this process, he will purify himself and the people, making them right with the LORD.H7364H1320H4325H6918H4725H3847H899H3318H6213H5930H5930H5971H3722H597125He must then burn all the fat of the sin offering on the altar.H2459H2403H6999H419626"The man chosen to drive the scapegoat into the wilderness of Azazel must wash his clothes and bathe himself in water. Then he may return to the camp.H7971H8163H5799H3526H899H7364H1320H4325H310H935H426427"The bull and the goat presented as sin offerings, whose blood Aaron takes into the Most Holy Place for the purification ceremony, will be carried outside the camp. The animals' hides, internal organs, and dung are all to be burned.H6499H2403H8163H2403H1818H935H3722H6944H3318H2351H4264H8313H784H5785H1320H656928The man who burns them must wash his clothes and bathe himself in water before returning to the camp.H8313H3526H899H7364H1320H4325H310H935H426429"On the tenth day of the appointed month in early autumnc, you must deny yourselves. Neither native-born Israelites nor foreigners living among you may do any kind of work. This is a permanent law for you.H2708H5769H7637H2320H6218H2320H6031H5315H6213H4399H249H1616H1481H843230On that day offerings of purification will be made for youc, and you will be purified in the LORD's presence from all your sins.H3117H3722H2891H2891H2403H6440H306831It will be a Sabbath day of complete rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. This is a permanent law for you.H7676H7677H6031H5315H2708H576932In future generations, the purificationc ceremony will be performed by the priest who has been anointed and ordained to serve as high priest in place of his ancestor Aaron. He will put on the holy linen garmentsH3548H4886H4390H3027H3547H1H3722H3847H906H899H6944H89933and purify the Most Holy Place, the Tabernacle, the altar, the priests, and the entire congregation.H3722H6944H4720H3722H168H4150H4196H3722H3548H5971H695134This is a permanent law for you, to purify the people of Israel from their sins, making them right with the LORD once each year." Moses followed all these instructions exactly as the LORD had commanded him.H5769H2708H3722H1121H3478H2403H259H8141H6213H3068H6680H4872

Leviticus 17

Prohibitions against Eating Blood

17Then the LORD said to Moses,H3068H1696H4872H5592"Give the following instructions to Aaron and his sons and all the people of Israel. This is what the LORD has commanded.H1696H175H1121H1121H3478H559H1697H3068H6680H5593"If any native Israelite sacrifices a bullc or a lamb or a goat anywhere inside or outside the campH376H376H1004H3478H7819H7794H3775H5795H4264H7819H2351H42644instead of bringing it to the entrance of the Tabernaclec to present it as an offering to the LORD, that person will be as guilty as a murderer. Such a person has shed blood and will be cut off from the community.H935H6607H168H4150H7126H7133H3068H6440H4908H3068H1818H2803H376H8210H1818H376H3772H7130H59715The purpose of this rule is to stop the Israelites from sacrificing animals in the open fields. It will ensure that they bring their sacrifices to the priest at the entrance of the Tabernacle, so he can present them to the LORD as peace offerings.H1121H3478H935H2077H2076H6440H7704H935H3068H6607H168H4150H3548H2076H8002H2077H30686Then the priest will be able to splatter the blood against the LORD's altar at the entrance of the Tabernacle, and he will burn the fat as a pleasing aroma to the LORD.H3548H2236H1818H4196H3068H6607H168H4150H6999H2459H5207H7381H30687The people must no longer be unfaithful to the LORD by offering sacrifices to the goat idolsc. This is a permanent law for them, to be observed from generation to generation.H2076H2077H8163H310H2181H2708H5769H17558"Give them this command as well. If any native Israelite or foreigner living among you offers a burnt offering or a sacrificeH559H376H1004H3478H1616H1481H8432H5927H5930H20779but does not bring it to the entrance of the Tabernacle to offer it to the LORD, that person will be cut off from the community.H935H6607H168H4150H6213H3068H376H3772H597110"And if any native Israelite or foreigner living among you eats or drinks blood in any form, I will turn against that person and cut him off from the community of your people,H376H1004H3478H1616H1481H8432H398H1818H5414H6440H5315H398H1818H3772H7130H597111for the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the LORDc. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible.H5315H1320H1818H5414H4196H3722H5315H1818H3722H531512That is why I have said to the people of Israel, 'You must never eat or drink blood—neither you nor the foreigners living among you.'H559H1121H3478H5315H398H1818H1616H1481H8432H398H181813"And if any native Israelite or foreigner living among you goes hunting and kills an animal or bird that is approved for eating, he must drain its blood and cover it with earth.H376H1121H3478H1616H1481H8432H6679H6718H2416H5775H398H8210H1818H3680H608314The life of every creature is in its blood. That is why I have said to the people of Israel, 'You must never eat or drink blood, for the life of any creature is in its blood.' So whoever consumes blood will be cut off from the community.H5315H1320H1818H5315H559H1121H3478H398H1818H1320H5315H1320H1818H398H377215"And if any native-born Israelites or foreigners eat the meat of an animal that died naturally or was torn up by wild animals, they must wash their clothes and bathe themselves in water. They will remain ceremonially unclean until evening, but then they will be clean.H5315H398H5038H2966H249H1616H3526H899H7364H4325H2930H6153H289116But if they do not wash their clothes and bathe themselves, they will be punished for their sin."H3526H7364H1320H5375H5771

I am the LORD your God.H1696H1121H3478H559H3068H4303So do not act like the people in Egypt, where you used to live, or like the people of Canaan, where I am taking you. You must not imitate their way of life.H4639H776H4714H3427H6213H4639H776H3667H935H6213H3212H27084You must obey all my regulations and be careful to obey my decrees, for I am the LORD your God.H6213H4941H8104H2708H3212H3068H4305If you obey my decrees and my regulations, you will find life through them. I am the LORD.H8104H2708H4941H834H120H6213H2425H30686"You must never have sexual relations with a close relative, for I am the LORD.H7126H376H7607H1320H1540H6172H30687"Do not violate your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual relations with her.H6172H1H6172H517H1540H517H1540H61728"Do not have sexual relations with any of your father's wives, for this would violate your father.H6172H1H802H1540H1H61729"Do not have sexual relations with your sister or half sister, whether she is your father's daughter or your mother's daughter, whether she was born into your household or someone else's.H6172H269H1323H1H1323H517H4138H1004H4138H2351H6172H154010"Do not have sexual relations with your granddaughter, whether she is your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter, for this would violate yourself.H6172H1121H1323H1323H1323H6172H1540H2007H617211"Do not have sexual relations with your stepsister, the daughter of any of your father's wives, for she is your sister.H6172H1H802H1323H4138H1H269H1540H617212"Do not have sexual relations with your father's sister, for she is your father's close relative.H1540H6172H1H269H1H760713"Do not have sexual relations with your mother's sister, for she is your mother's close relative.H1540H6172H517H269H517H760714"Do not violate your uncle, your father's brother, by having sexual relations with his wife, for she is your aunt.H1540H6172H1H251H7126H802H173315"Do not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law; she is your son's wife, so you must not have sexual relations with her.H1540H6172H3618H1121H802H1540H617216"Do not have sexual relations with your brother's wife, for this would violate your brother.H1540H6172H251H802H251H617217"Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. And do not takec her granddaughter, whether her son's daughter or her daughter's daughter, and have sexual relations with her. They are close relatives, and this would be a wicked act.H1540H6172H802H1323H3947H1121H1323H1323H1323H1540H6172H7608H215418"While your wife is living, do not marry her sister and have sexual relations with her, for they would be rivals.H3947H802H269H6887H1540H6172H241619"Do not have sexual relations with a woman during her period of menstrual impurity.H7126H802H1540H6172H5079H293220"Do not defile yourself by having sexual intercourse with your neighbor's wife.H5414H7903H2233H5997H802H293021"Do not permit any of your children to be offered as a sacrifice to Molech, for you must not bring shame on the name of your God. I am the LORD.H5414H2233H5674H4432H2490H8034H430H306822"Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.H7901H2145H4904H802H844123"A man must not defile himself by having sex with an animal. And a woman must not offer herself to a male animal to have intercourse with it. I will cause the land to vomit them out.H776H2930H6485H5771H776H6958H342726You must obey all my decrees and regulations. You must not commit any of these detestable sins. Psalms 35

35[A psalm of David.] O LORD, oppose those who oppose me. Fight those who fight against me.H1732H7378H3068H3401H3898H38982Put on your armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and come to my aid.H2388H4043H6793H6965H58333Lift up your spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Let me hear you say, "I will give you victory!"H7324H2595H5462H7125H7291H559H5315H34444Bring shame and disgrace on those trying to kill me; turn them back and humiliate those who want to harm me.H954H3637H1245H5315H5472H268H2659H2803H74515Blow them away like chaff in the wind—a wind sent by the angel of the LORD.H4671H6440H7307H4397H3068H17606Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.H1870H2822H2519H4397H3068H72917I did them no wrong, but they laid a trap for me. I did them no wrong, but they dug a pit to catch me.H2600H2934H7568H7845H2600H2658H53158So let sudden ruin come upon them! Let them be caught in the trap they set for me! Let them be destroyed in the pit they dug for me.H7722H935H3045H3808H7568H2934H3920H7722H53079Then I will rejoice in the LORD. I will be glad because he rescues me.H5315H1523H3068H7797H344410With every bone in my body I will praise him. "LORD, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?"H6106H559H3068H5337H6041H2389H6041H34H149711Malicious witnesses testify against me. They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.H2555H5707H6965H7592H304512They repay me evil for good. I am sick with despair.H7999H7451H2896H7908H531513Yet when they were ill, I grieved for them. I denied myself by fasting for them, but my prayers returned unanswered.H2470H3830H8242H6031H5315H6685H8605H7725H243614I was sad, as though they were my friends or family, as if I were grieving for my own mother.H1980H7453H251H7817H6937H57H51715But they are glad now that I am in trouble; they gleefully join together against me. I am attacked by people I don't even know; they slander me constantly.H6761H8055H622H5222H622H3045H7167H182616They mock me and call me names; they snarl at me.H2611H3934H4580H2786H812717How long, O Lord, will you look on and do nothing? Rescue me from their fierce attacks. Protect my life from these lions!H136H7200H7725H5315H7722H3173H371518Then I will thank you in front of the great assembly. I will praise you before all the people.H3034H7227H6951H1984H6099H597119Don't let my treacherous enemies rejoice over my defeat. Don't let those who hate me without cause gloat over my sorrow.H341H8267H8055H7169H5869H8130H260020They don't talk of peace; they plot against innocent people who mind their own business.H1696H7965H2803H4820H1697H7282H77621They shout, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we saw him do it!"H6310H7337H559H1889H1889H5869H720022O LORD, you know all about this. Do not stay silent. Do not abandon me now, O Lord.H7200H3068H2790H136H736823Wake up! Rise to my defense! Take up my case, my God and my Lord.H5782H6974H4941H7379H430H13624Declare me not guilty, O LORD my God, for you give justice. Don't let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles.H8199H3068H430H6664H805525Don't let them say, "Look, we got what we wanted! Now we will eat him alive!"H559H3820H1889H5315H559H110426May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor.H954H2659H3162H8056H7451H3847H1322H3639H143127But give great joy to those who came to my defense.
