17:3-5 Claim of Innocence. These verses amplify the assertion of innocence (the claim begins in v. 1, "lips free of deceit"). The singer has opened himself to the Lord's examination (tried, visited, tested), and he recounts his efforts to stay pure (purposed, avoided, steps have held fast, feet have not slipped).
