118:5-7 I Called, and He Answered. The "personal testimony" part of the psalm (see note on Psalm 118) begins by recounting an instance in which I called on the Lord and the Lord answered me and set me free. God's answer shows that he is on my side and ensures that I shall look in triumph on those who hate me (who brought about the psalmist's distress).
118:6 Hebrews 13:6 urges its Jewish Christian readers to apply this verse to themselves, especially as they are tempted to fear what man can do to them (which is why they considered returning to "ordinary" Judaism; see note on Ps. 110:4).
