10:17-25 Judah Will Go into Exile. God will remove sinful Judah from the Promised Land. Exile will be horrible and could have been avoided.

10:17 bundle. The refugees from the countryside had brought just a few possessions into the city that is now under siege.

10:18 slinging out. God will hurl the people from the land into the unprotected distress of captivity.

10:19-20 Jerusalem expresses her woes (Lam. 1:20-22; 2:20-22). Her tent (the city) is destroyed and her children (the inhabitants) are captured.

10:21 shepherds. Judah's leaders (see note on 3:15). do not inquire. They refuse to seek God's word (cf. 1 Kings 22:5-8; 2 Kings 1:16; Isa. 9:13). their flock is scattered. Judah's citizens are in exile (Deut. 28:64-68).

10:22 rumor . . . commotion. Word of the invasion has reached Judah. the north country. Babylon.

10:23-25 Jeremiah turns to God for wisdom (vv. 11-16), for he needs God to direct his steps. He knows God can correct a person, and only does so justly (Heb. 12:5-11). He asks that the idolatrous nations attacking Judah may soon receive divine correction.
