Scripture Reflection by Sang Sur on Romans 14:21-22 posted January 23, 2025 - Prayer Tents

Primary concern when we come together: share the life of Jesus.
Though the Message translation adds a few words here, the translator gets to the meat of the problem. When we come together, food can feel good, especially for the men, but that should not be the main goal. If eating distracts from having a conversation, caring for the other person, or demonstrating Christ through the interaction, we got it all wrong.
This is the same for when we hold communion together. We need to forgive and make amends so that we can share and partake in His body (the one Church) together.
So let’s not let food or anything take precedence in the relationships God calls us to built.
Verse 22 explains how to do that. It is to cultivate a deeper relationship with God, and let that love overflow, instead of demanding others meet your standards.
21When you sit down to a meal, your primary concern should not be to feed your own face but to share the life of Jesus. So be sensitive and courteous to the others who are eating. Don’t eat or say or do things that might interfere with the free exchange of love. 22Cultivate your own relationship with God, but don’t impose it on others. You’re fortunate if your behavior and your belief are coherent.
