38. I have been a born-again Christian since 2012. In 2017, I suffered a relapse back into depression and was admitted into the hospital because of this. Since then, I have lost my confidence and zeal for God. How do I regain my zeal for God once again?

Answer

Hello,

Thank you for asking such an excellent question.

Sorry to hear about your depression and the difficulties you have experienced. I am glad you desire to have a zeal for God, and it is something God initiated in you to seek God and find Him.

Here's a good verse:

But from there, you will search again for the LORD your God. And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him. "In the distant future, when you are suffering all these things, you will finally return to the LORD your God and listen to what he tells you. For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the solemn covenant he made with your ancestors. Deuteronomy 4:29-31 (NLT)

The passage refers to when people have turned away from God, and they decide to turn back to Him.

Just as salvation comes from God (Ephesians 2:1-10), the zeal and the desire to seek God comes from Him and His grace (Deuteronomy 30:6 points to how God can transform our hearts so that we may love God). So, now that God is directing your heart to get back to the zeal you once had, your role would be to surrender to God. Believe that God is guiding your heart and seek Him, letting go of anything that prevents you from doing so. Ask God honestly for that zeal that you once had. Have a conversation with Him through prayer and reading of the Scriptures.

I hope you draw close to God much deeper than you ever experienced.

Please feel free to write back.

Many blessings.

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
