Answer

Hello,

Thanks for the wonderful question!

In this instance, the people are correct. Our mistakes do NOT define us.

That is the Gospel, that regardless of the number of sins in our lives, anyone who accepts God's perfect sacrifice for our sins can be forgiven. As a result, his/her relationship with God would be restored. Please see ptents.com/gospel101.

Then, when we do wrong, are we not responsible? We are, but not before God, not when it relates to our relationship with Him. Jesus purifies us of all sin, and God sees no sin in us when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Our responsibility when we do wrong would then conclude here on earth. For example, if we steal something, we may go to jail. Perhaps if not caught, we may struggle with the guilt (for Christians, that may be the Holy Spirit telling us to return what we have stolen or to turn ourselves in). We are responsible for the wrongs we do, but that mistake does not define our relationship with God. We are His children regardless of the wrongs we have done when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

If by chance you thought that our mistakes did define us, please note many people in this world struggle with this, as it is the distinction between the law (or religion) and Christianity. Christianity is about a relationship with God based on the grace that God has given us. He provided the solution and we only need to accept (it is a gift, and we call that grace). Other religions require our actions to justify the sins we have committed. Yet, Christians believe God has done that for us.

As a result, our mistakes DO NOT define us.

Please write again if you require further clarification.

Many blessings!

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
