It is an important question because the perfect sacrifice to atone for all sins must be without sin. Jesus could be that sacrifice because he had no sin (2Corinthians 5:21, 1John 3:5, 1Peter 1:19).

Read the following verses:
Matthew 1:18, 25 (NLT) This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.... (Joseph) did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

If Jesus were born through natural man and woman, the original sin would pass onto Jesus (Consider Romans 5:12, where the sin is passed down generationally). However, Jesus was born through Mary before she had sexual relations with any man. Jesus was placed in Mary's womb miraculously.

Unfortunately, the answer may not be as thorough as you want. It does not answer the question about Mary's sinfulness. Romans 3:23 says all people are sinful, and that includes Mary! If Mary was sinless, she could have died on the cross, but we know that is not true! We must accept that the Holy Spirit protected Jesus from the sin that would be carried through Mary's imperfection.

Many things may not be explained in the Scriptures based on our limited information. However, there is enough to teach us the heart of God and how He longs to relate with us. Throughout the Old Testament, even from the book of Genesis, God shared His plan to save humanity from the burden of sin. The New Testament shows what Jesus has done and explains how Jesus was able to take our sins because He was sinless.
