CITIES OF THE VALLEY

Five cities (also called “cities of the plain”) — Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (or Zoar) — in the region of the valley of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea, at Gen. 14:3, 8, 10 called the valley of Siddim. The kings of these cities (Heb. ʿārê hakkikkār) rebelled against Chedorlaomer of Elam, prompting the battle recorded in Gen. 14. Except for Zoar, the cities were destroyed by Yahweh because of their corruption (Gen. 19:24-29).
