The broad bean, Vicia faba L, sown in winter and ripe in summer. The plants grow up to 1 m. (3 ft.) tall and have fragrant white blossoms. Remains of Vicia faba have been found at several Bronze and Iron Age sites in Israel.

David and his troops eat beans (Heb. pôl) at Mahanaim during Absalom’s revolt (2 Sam. 17:28). God instructs Ezekiel to make bread from “wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt” in preparation for the siege of Jerusalem (Ezek. 4:9). Ground beans are often used by the poor as a filler in bread.
